Smeg Citrus Juicer CJF01 summary

True to form with all Smeg products, this citrus juicer features the iconic 1950s design in a range of colours – or if you’ve got a lot of money to spend, the citrus juicer is also available in a bold Dolce and Gabbana print.

Whilst we’re often used to highly multifunctional appliances, this citrus juicer does one thing, and one thing only. Thankfully, it does it exceptionally well.

How easy is the Smeg Citrus Juicer to use?

Putting this juicer together is simple and intuitive. It’s made up of four parts: a plastic base with spout attached, stainless steel strainer, stainless steel juicing cone and BPA-free plastic dust cover. All the component parts slot together with ease, but if you’re struggling, a useful guide is included in the manual.

There are no physical on/off buttons on this citrus juicer. To start working, it simply needs to be plugged in and then have pressure applied to the juicing cone in the centre. It turns at a slow and steady pace, allowing you to reach into every crevice of the citrus fruit you’re juicing.

It’s remarkably quiet in use, so there’s no risk of waking anyone up when juicing early in the morning.

For fuss-free clean up, the bottom section of the juicer acts as a barrier between the main body of the juicer and the strainer. It also filters the juice down towards the spout. The spout is movable, allowing you to either direct the juice into your glass or, if you move it upwards, it stops any wayward drips. All the attachments are dishwasher safe.

Results

We tested this juicer by making a simple freshly squeezed orange juice. The juicing cone is comfortable to use, and we managed to get all the juice out of our oranges. Two oranges yielded 200ml of orange juice (though we’d argue this speaks more to the juiciness of the oranges than the citrus juicer itself).

You won’t get super smooth juice when using this citrus juice, as it’s not fully designed to do that, but the stainless steel strainer does an excellent job of filtering out the large lumps, leaving you with a smooth and clear juice with a few bits.

How sustainable is the Smeg Citrus Juicer?

The manual offers information about how to recycle the citrus juicer after use, but we struggled to find a clear answer to where this model was made.

We were very happy to find that all the packaging is recyclable, though.

Conclusion

We’re generally not the biggest fans of products that perform a single task; in a world where we should be cutting back and opting for more versatile pieces of kit when we do buy, a single-function citrus juicer feels like a less-than-sustainable choice.

However, the Smeg Citrus Juicer performs brilliantly well and would become a must-keep on the kitchen counter. This citrus juicer isn’t for everyone. For one, it’s high price will be off-putting for some. But if you’re committed to freshly made orange or grapefruit juice daily, love a cocktail made with the freshest ingredients possible, or cook or bake often with citrus, this juicer will certainly make life easier.

This is an undeniably luxury appliance, and one to consider if you’re going to get good use out of it. If you’ve already got Smeg appliances in the kitchen, like the Smeg kettle, Smeg ECF01 espresso coffee machine or Smeg TSF03 toaster, the Smeg Citrus juicer will seamlessly fit into the collection.
