Next copper-effect slow cooker summary

The retailer Next perhaps isn't the first place you'd look for a small kitchen appliance, but in the case of its copper slow cooker, it's one to consider. The copper design makes a refreshing change from the brushed steel outers of many others. It has a contemporary feel and doesn't look out of place on a kitchen countertop.

On opening, plastic is noticeably prevalent, with seemingly unnecessary additions like two plug wrappers in addition to the plug spoke protection. It also has just a 2.5-litre working capacity, so don't be misled by the 3.5-litre bowl size. However, its cooking ability justifies its inclusion in our best list.

How easy is the Next copper-effect slow cooker to use?

We particularly like the cool-touch silicone handles and lid handle on this slow cooker. It adds a good non-slip element to each.

The inner pot is ceramic, but doesn't sit snugly inside the outer body, which makes it feel a bit unstable, even though there are non-slip feet. Made of toughened glass, the lid survived a drop on a stone floor.

The switch is easy to use, offering low, high and warm functions indicated by a power light. We tested the low and keep warm functions with a slow cooker beef stew and 5-a-day tagine recipe.

Results

The end results save it. Although some moisture escapes from the beef stew, the meat is tender and soft and not at all overdone after a full eight hours.

The vegetables don't fair so well, burning a little around the edges and tasting a bit overdone. This is relatively easy to scrub off in hot soapy water, although both the lid and the pot are both dishwasher-safe.

Conclusion

If you're after a contemporary looking slow cooker that's simple but effective, the copper-effect gadget by Next is an affordable and stylish one that does the basics well. It makes a nice addition to a countertop.
