Netta 2-slice panini maker and health grill summary

The first thing we noticed about this Netta sandwich maker was just how neat and compact it is. It’s deceptively small however, as the toasting plates have a generous surface area and comfortably fit two toasties.

It’s classically designed with a flared base and looks like an old-school panini grill. There’s nothing to set up as the grill plates are not removable but do be aware this model produces a lot of smoke when heating up for the first few times, so make sure to open your windows or have the extractor fan on.

How easy is the Netta 2-slice panini maker and health grill to use?

Like many of the other models tested, this sandwich toaster doesn’t have an on/off switch, rather it begins to heat up once plugged in and takes just two and half minutes to do so. It does, however, feature a temperature dial with minimum and maximum settings. Unfortunately, the instruction manual isn't clear about what these temperatures mean celsius-wise, or indeed when you’d need to use any setting other than maximum.

There are no recipes or cooking times other than a suggestion to cook food for three-to-eight minutes, which is suitably vague. This is fine if you’ve used a panini press before, but for sandwich toaster newbies, a little more information would be useful.

When toasting, sandwiches were not squished by the weight of the lid and the floating hinge sat flush on top. The handle is comfortable and stays cool when used.

Results

We put the grill plates through their paces with a classic cheese toastie, deep-filled toastie, and tomato & mozzarella panini. Because the manual said that pre-heating would take approximately five minutes, but actually took two and a half, we decided to err on the side of caution when cooking. We checked both the cheese toastie and deep-fill toastie at the two-minute mark – both were already golden brown, evenly cooked with grill lines adding a rich, toasty flavour.

Our panini took three minutes and was equally well cooked. The contents were fully warmed and melted and were not squashed out of the side of the bread.

Although the grill plates are not removable, clean-up was a doddle. Nothing stuck to the non-stick plates so a quick wipe when cool was all this toastie maker needed.

Conclusion

Despite its less-than-useful instruction manual we really can’t fault the Netta 2-slice panini maker and health grill when it comes to performance. Whether you’re making toasties or deep-fill paninis, this model produces consistent, high-quality results. Perfectly crisp bread with precise grill lines and a soft, melting interior: Netta gets toasted sandwiches right.
