You get an awful lot of kit for your money with this George Home sandwich maker. The machine itself is sturdy without being too heavy and the instructions are good, clear and detailed (it even explains how to change the fuse) though it’s a shame there weren't any recipes. It's an unflashy, average-sized machine that goes about its work effectively.
The sandwich toaster comes complete with three sets of interchangeable plates – one for toasties, a second for waffles, and a third flat one for grills.
We found that it pre-heated quickly in just three minutes and 20 seconds and it was clear when it was ready to cook as the green light came on. Our toastie, using standard supermarket bread which we buttered on both sides, was slightly too big for the plate so we had to put it across the second plate too.
The instructions said to allow two to four minutes for the sandwich to cook. When we checked it after two minutes, it was cooked if a little light for our liking. It was beautifully brown and crispy after three. The toasted sandwich was well sealed and the filling was melted.
To change the plates, you have to press locking pins (two for the top plate and two for the bottom) and then slot in the new ones. Removing the top plate was slightly tricky – the instructions helpfully explained you need to use your thumbs to push the pins while pulling the plate towards you with your little fingers. This was not the easiest of manoeuvres and it took a few attempts. The plates can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher.
We put the grill plate through its paces with a panini, which came out perfectly – dark, with a griddled appearance – after three minutes. This was an impressive result. The grill plates can be used for anything from burgers to vegetables and would be a good alternative to heating the whole grill, especially for one person.
Waffles take five to seven minutes to cook and we were happy with ours after six. The underside of the waffles cooked more evenly and browned more than the top and they stuck slightly to the plates, though they were easy enough to remove.
