Lakeland hand mixer summary
This well-built, black-and-chrome mixer from Lakeland is heavier than others in our test, but is still lovely to hold, with good balance and an extremely efficient 400w motor that whizzes through all mixes, including bread dough. But beware: the power of the motor also means that ingredients can sometimes fly around, especially icing sugar. Once we learned to tame the speed, starting slow and easing off before it got too fast, the Lakeland whisk performed as well as those at almost twice the price.
What were our first impressions of the Lakeland hand mixer?
The Lakeland is a very well-built whisk, with a black-and-chrome-coloured, sturdy plastic casing, plus equally well-made stainless-steel beaters and dough hooks. It's not overly striking, but it delivers on performance and handling very well.
You'll need to apply some pressure to insert the attachments, but once in, you'll hear a reassuring, firm click. The eject button also requires a forceful push to release the attachments. During testing, we discovered that the instruction booklet states that both the beaters and dough hooks have identifying rings on the stems, but only the dough hooks have these – this is important as the dough hooks must be inserted correctly to prevent damaging the whisk.
How is the Lakeland hand mixer to use?
Though this whisk is slightly heavier than some, that is offset by good balance and a large and extremely comfortable handle. These also lessen vibrations, which are barely discernible across all speed levels, even at the top. The Lakeland model is very easy to use, with a simple thumb slider switch on the handle to flick through the five speeds and additional pulse function. Unfortunately, the chrome switch can also become grubby very quickly, as it's located where greasy fingers will be, and therefore requires regular wiping to prevent it from being slippery.
A 400W motor makes this whisk fly, but unfortunately, that means icing sugar can form clouds above the bowl even at the lowest speed. At higher speeds, we struggled to keep the whisk and dough in the bowl. We did manage to calm the dough down by reducing the speed, but this, in turn, meant slightly longer mixing along with the much cleaner work surface. Having learned that pulling back with this speedy machine was the way to go, we were delighted with the results of our meringues – whipped, glossy and stable in less than 2 minutes.
Our verdict
The Lakeland mixer performs as well as those at almost twice the price. It may not be as handsome as some, but who cares when it delivers as well as this one does?
