iKettle summary
One problem with most kettles – in fact, all of the ones we tested except this – is that you have to be in the same room as it to switch it on. How very last century! The iKettle works via an app, meaning you can set it to boil remotely – if you’re desperate for a cuppa the minute you walk in the door, boil it when you're round the corner. You can also schedule it to come on at certain times. You just have to remember to fill it with water when you are in the same room.

How does the iKettle work?
As well as being able to operate the appliance using an app you download to your phone, the iKettle also works with the likes of Alexa and Siri – or you can be really old fashioned and just press the button on the base.
We turned it on from 100 metres down the street, and two floors above the kitchen – both worked perfectly. Be warned – doing so can frighten the life out of people standing near the kettle at the time.
Perhaps surprisingly, this is one of the least flashy kettles we tested. The kettle is rather minimalist in looks – it’s brushed steel with no other markings, though it’s also available in a flashier white and gold.
It takes a few minutes to set up, as you have to download the app and follow the instructions to pair it with the machine. The app allows you to select a temperature between 20 and 100C – the lowest starting point in all our tests.
There’s a ‘quick boil’ button on the first screen of the app, the next offers three quick buttons – 85C, 95C and 100C – or a dial to select your own temperature. You can watch the temperature go up, see the water level and decide how long you want the water to stay warm for.
There’s even a ‘formula’ mode to get the right temperature for baby milk.
The kettle has an ergonomic handle, with only the top attached to the kettle. It’s comfortable to lift and easy to open, with a button on the handle which you press to flip up the lid. The kettle has a wide opening for easy filling and a small spout for precision pouring
The iKettle was one of the speediest we tested too, boiling water in an average of 2 minutes 14 seconds.
