Combining the convenience of a coffee pod machine with the mechanisms of a higher-spec machine, the Opal One was launched as 'the first machine' purposely designed to brew speciality coffee pods'.

The machine itself has a slimline, modern design and a simple push-button interface. Three espresso options (short, normal and lungo) are selectable, with options to adjust the temperature if you'd like cooler or hotter drinks.

It has 41 grind settings, a 200g bean capacity (enough for 12 cups), a spouted catch to minimise mess, and a volumetric dosing lid to help with measuring the beans.

It's also a super-precise piece of kit: grinding is measured in seconds rather than cup size or dose, and we found the timings were accurate when recorded on a stopwatch. You'll need to weigh your beans out before you grind – a good set of coffee scales will help with this – but you can also use the dosing measurements on the lid for ease.

Grind cold brew bottle

A good batch of cold brew is light, fruity and refreshing, but making your own without any equipment can be a fiddly process. This 1-litre bottle from coffee pod brand Grind was a doddle to use and offers capacity for up to five cups.

Simply add 50g of ground coffee (roughly 7 tbsp) into the filter basket, pour in up to a litre of water, and leave it to brew for between eight to 24 hours (the longer you leave your cold brew, the more intense the flavour will be). A silicone stopper and integrated filter are provided, and in test this product was also awarded extra marks for its fully recyclable packaging.
