Considering it's the smallest and least expensive gas barbecue we tested, George at ASDA's Expert Grill was surprisingly difficult to put together – taking just shy of three hours to build. Although you're given all the tools needed, it's unnecessarily fiddly with endless small parts, screws, washers and pins.
In general, the pieces and materials feel cheaply manufactured, despite the finished grill being sturdy enough in practice. It's lighter weight and small footprint (despite solid, unfoldable side shelves) fits with its price tag, yet this also makes for easy storage and transport, which could be useful for people with little space.
The gas regulator provided connects with ease and you can get it preheated in around five minutes. Unfortunately, like many of its more expensive competitors, the Expert Grill is let down by the cooking quality, or lack thereof.
It maintained its heat brilliantly but control was non-existent thanks to the shallow depth of the grill – you can only cook over a high heat, so most of the produce we tested burned before being cooked properly, whilst the fat that rendered out exacerbated things by causing regular, dramatic flare-ups. The size also restricts its versatility and overall usefulness as an everyday barbecue.
The Expert Grill might seem like a solid, affordable option but an incredibly tricky and slow build, unmanageable high heat and the poor quality cooking that resulted simply outweigh its positives. In the end, it offers little value for money.
