Breville DuraCeramic waffle maker
Pros: DuraCeramic coating, good texture and colour
Cons: Slower than some
Overall rating: 5/5
Maintaining its position on the best buys list from our last review, this waffle maker stands the test of time. Everything about it oozes quality. It’s solid and quite heavy, with impressively weighty plates and sturdy round feet. It looks good too, with a grey body and silver top.
A key selling point is its DuraCeramic coating – a specialised ceramic coating which is designed to be scratch resistant and easy to clean. It’s also designed for faster cooking times and while it wasn’t the speediest of the ones we tested, they all turned out waffles of different sizes and thicknesses so it is hard to compare like with like.
This comes with clear instructions and we particularly liked the fact that it is specific about how much mixture to use (around 75ml per waffle). It made a welcome change from having to guess. It also meant we avoided both the travesty of too-thin waffles and the mess of putting too much mixture in and watching it leak out of the sides. The plates are deeper than most.
The only confusion is around the clasp. It’s instinctive to shut it during cooking but the instructions tell you not to, so the waffle can breathe and the steam can be released. The clasp can be used during heat up, though, and helps when storing it, too.
This comes with five recipes in the instruction book, from classic waffles to chia multigrain ones. There are also some useful tips on mixing your batter as well as how to freeze them should you wish to batch cook.
Also clear are the indicator lights so it’s simple to see at a glance when the machine has heated and is ready to use. Pre-heating took just over four minutes.
The recommended cooking time is seven minutes and these produced thick waffles that were very evenly cooked on the base and slightly unevenly browned on the top. Measuring around 11 x 10cm, they were among the best of all the waffles we tried – a good size and pleasingly thick. Our discerning teenage waffle tasters wolfed these down appreciatively.
The plates remove easily for washing. Dishwashing is not advised, in order to protect the coating. The upper and lower plates aren’t interchangeable, but are marked on the back so you can slide the right one into its correct position. Storage is easy as you can wrap the cord around the panel on the back.
