Beko SMM888BX stainless steel soup maker

Pros: powerful, sturdy, efficient
Cons: chunky, heavy

Star rating: 4.5/5

Available from Beko (£100)

For its price, the stainless steel Beko SMM888BX soup maker is powerful, robust and great value for money, plus it can be used for general blender purposes, like making smoothies and sauces. It also looks good for its price, and not too dissimilar to popular Magimix and Vitamix styles.

The Beko SMM888BX is incredibly straightforward to use, thanks in part to its smart LED display interface and timer, plus speed dial control.

It offers four speed settings, plus a pulse option, and its powerful 1800W motor mixes ingredients well – so much so the smoothie ingredients we tested disintegrated completely to perform a smooth and satisfying smoothie. The appliance also comes with a number of handy pre-set functions including auto-clean, ice crush, and sauce.

Unlike some of the models we tested, the 1.75-litre jug can withstand heat, making light work of soups and sauces. Plus, there are two specific pre-set functions for soups: ‘chunky soup’ and ‘fine soup’ to cater to different tastes and preferences.

The blender also comes with a handy built-in keep warm function, meaning that you can make hot soups, and keep them warm for up to 40 minutes after cooking.

The appliance's built-in self-clean function works well – it just requires a splash of warm water and washing liquid and then relies on its in-built pulse to splash water up the sides of the jug.

For those who are short on space, or are looking for a space-saving device, it's worth noting the stand of the Beko SMM888BX is a little on the chunky side. What's more, we also found the 1.75-litre jug to be slightly heavier than others we tested, especially when filled to capacity with liquid and ingredients.

It comes with a short instruction manual, but it's rather brief. That said, it isn't too much of an inconvenience seeing as the blender is so straightforward to use.

Overall, considering it combines a powerful blender with an efficient soup maker that even heats up and keeps warm soups, it's great value for its price, and also looks more expensive than is.
