From the off, the Beko model is simplicity itself. A relatively small box with no excess packaging holds a compact microwave which can be lifted without too much effort. Setup is a doddle, without any fiddly instructions for setting the timer, and it’s the most intuitive to use of all the models we tested.
The display is large and clear, the buttons are tactile and well-spaced, timing is set with a dial rather than buttons, and the handle is sturdy and easy-to-pull, all of which make this a great option for older or less dexterous users, or those of us who are less tech-savvy.
The instruction manual provides plenty of detail to take the guessing out of how to use the microwave’s few basic settings – five powers up to 800W, defrosting by weight and time, a 30-second quick start button, a timer, a child lock and eight auto-cook functions for meat, fish and veg, as well as reheating. Pretty impressive for the price.
We were pleased to see that the presets allow for 100g increments when cooking a baked potato – meaning you can cook a single spud without adjusting your timings, while many models have a higher minimum weight only suitable for families.
Using the presets was a little hit-and-miss – a baked potato needed a little longer in the oven, as did a chicken breast we defrosted, but adding a little extra time resulted in impressively even defrosting, and a tasty potato. Cooked chicken came out cooked-through but still moist.
Small issues include the lack of a half-way alert when defrosting foods that might need turning, a small window that’s hard to see through, and a very basic look. But if you’re looking for something small and easy-to-use, this is a great buy.
