Aber Falls rhubarb & ginger gin – 41.3% ABV
Overall rating: 4/5
In a nutshell: A proudly Welsh gin that's inspired by the warming, wintery flavours of rhubarb and ginger crumble. The resulting spirit is like a hug in a glass.
After a 100-year hiatus, Aber Falls has bought the tradition of distilling back to north Wales. It's based at the foot of Aber Falls in Abergwyngregyn, which means the distillery has an exceptional water source.
Welsh-inspired botanicals and sustainably sourced ingredients, including Anglesey sea salt, go into Aber Falls's range of spirits, and its rhubarb & ginger gin is the latest.
Recreating those Sunday lunch vibes, the nostalgic flavours of rhubarb and ginger crumble with a burnt sugar top note come through on the nose, with juicy, tart rhubarb the shining star. When drunk neat, we felt the tongue-tingling warmth from the ginger, backed up with just a touch of black pepper.
Zingy notes of lemon peel, forest pine and juniper are also present, creating a medium-long, refreshing yet very complex finish.
We were extremely impressed by the complexity – this is a spirit that builds, revealing more of its botanicals with each sip. The warm spicy notes make this an ideal drink to enjoy throughout the colder months.
The perfect pour
Pour over plenty of ice and drink with cranberry or apple juice for a fruity, refreshing long serve. Garnish with lime wedges to cut through any residual sweetness.
