  • 50g ground coffee

Method

  • step 1

    Put 400ml cold water into a large jug or jar and add the coffee grounds, but do not stir the mixture. Cover and leave to steep for 24 hrs.

    Gently stir the mixture, then pour it through a funnel or sieve lined with coffee filter paper (or a sheet of kitchen paper) into another large jug. This concentrate will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days.

  • step 3

    To serve dilute 1 part cold brew with 2 parts still or sparkling water (or to your taste) and serve with lots of ice.

How is cold brew coffee different from regular coffee?

As the coffee grounds are steeped in cold water rather than hot, this process takes a lot longer than regular coffee in order to extract the right amount of flavour, caffeine and colour.

The slow, gentle infusion process results in a smoother, less acidic flavour than regular coffee. This is because fewer of the coffee’s bitter compounds are extracted in cold water, making cold brew coffee slightly sweeter in taste. It’s often slightly stronger than regular coffee, but can be diluted with water, if you wish.

How to serve cold brew coffee

Cold brew coffee can either be served over ice for a refreshing drink, or warmed up in the microwave. When heating, you can add a splash of water, if desired, to slightly dilute the coffee.
